The OFCE and the CEPII merge to create the French Institute for Economics (IFE)

The French Institute for Economics
A new benchmark for understanding, informing and anticipating the economy
The 1st of July 2026 marks a major milestone for economic research in France as the CEPII and the OFCE officially merge to form a single institution: the French Institute for Economics (Institut français d'économie, IFE).
The creation of the IFE gives effect to the agreement signed on 8 April 2026 by the Prime Minister, the President of the National Foundation for Political Science (FNSP), and the President of Sciences Po. Placed under the auspices of Sciences Po, the IFE aims to become an internationally recognised centre of excellence in applied economics, bringing fresh insights to the major economic challenges facing France, Europe and the wider world.
The IFE brings together two complementary legacies. Since 1981, the OFCE has established itself as a leading centre for macroeconomic analysis, economic forecasting, and the evaluation of public, environmental and industrial policies. For nearly half a century, the CEPII has been at the forefront of research on the global economy, international trade and international finance. Together, these two institutions now combine their complementary expertise, particularly on European issues, their research methods and their international networks to address the economic challenges of the twenty-first century.
At a time when ecological, digital and demographic transitions are accelerating, and when geopolitical tensions are reshaping French and European policymaking, understanding and anticipating economic developments requires a comprehensive perspective. The IFE embraces this approach by bringing together expertise in macroeconomic analysis and forecasting, social and industrial policy, international trade, migration, innovation, competition and the green transition within a single institution.
Our mission remains unchanged: producing rigorous, independent research that contributes to public debate and serves policymakers, businesses, international organisations, the media, the academic community, and everyone seeking to better understand economic change through robust evidence and internationally recognised scientific methods.
Scientific independence is the cornerstone of the IFE. Its governance will bring together representatives of France's leading public economic institutions, Sciences Po and distinguished independent experts. An International Scientific Advisory Board, composed of leading scholars, will regularly assess the quality of the Institute's research and ensure that it continues to meet the highest international standards.
Today marks the beginning of a new institution with a clear ambition to place economic knowledge at the service of a better understanding of the world and more effective public policymaking.
We extend our sincere thanks to all the researchers, administrative and technical staff, partners and public authorities whose commitment has made this transformation possible.
Join us on 9 September as we launch the IFE website and unveil the Institute's organisational structure and research programme.
